Paint that stays put: making your stone weatherproof

Nothing hurts more than watching a beautifully painted stone turn into a watercolour after one rain shower. With the right materials your design stays bright for years.

Start with the right stone

Pick a smooth, non-porous stone. Garden or beach pebbles work fine; wash them with soap and water first and let them dry fully. A porous stone soaks up paint and dulls your colours.

Acrylic paint wins

Acrylic sticks well, covers in one or two coats and comes in every colour. Poster paint dissolves in rain and nail polish flakes off. For fine lines and the stone ID, acrylic markers are ideal.

Write the ID (e.g. HS-7F2K) on the bottom with a black acrylic marker and varnish over it. That keeps it readable for every finder.

Varnish is not optional

Two thin coats of water-based clear varnish (matte or gloss) protect against rain and UV. Spray varnish is easiest with kids: spray outside, dry ten minutes, done.

Let it dry. Really dry

Give each coat an hour and the varnish a full night. A stone that goes outside too early sticks to everything — don’t ask how we know.
